Fionn Bheinn

Fionn Bheinn is a mountain in the northwestern Scottish Highlands, standing south of Loch Fannich. It reaches 933 metres and is classed as a Munro, a Scottish peak over 914 metres. The south side slopes gently, covered in smooth grass, while the north face drops steeply and looks more dramatic. The contrast between the two sides makes the mountain striking from different angles. Its name means ‘white mountain’ in Gaelic, hinting at its often snow-capped appearance in winter. The peak lies within a wild landscape of moorland and lochs, far from towns and roads. Its isolation adds to the sense of space and quiet found here. The usual way up starts in the village of Achnasheen to the south. Walkers follow the Allt Achadh na Sine burn towards Creagan nan Laogh, a rocky nose partway up. From there the grassy slopes lead without difficulty to the summit. Another popular route follows the east ridge, which gives fine views of the steep north face. Both paths are straightforward but require good boots and a map. The mountain is often climbed in clear weather to enjoy the wide views across the Highlands. On clear days Ben Wyvis and other peaks can be seen from the top. At the summit a trig point marks the highest point, surrounded by a ring of stones. The view takes in Loch Fannich below and the hills of Ross-shire stretching to the horizon. The grassy slopes are home to deer and grouse, while golden eagles sometimes circle overhead. The silence and space make the climb feel remote, even though roads are not far away. The mountain rewards effort with a strong sense of achievement and quiet beauty. Its two faces—gentle and steep—offer different rewards to those who reach the top.
