Städtisches Spiel- und Festhaus

The Städtisches Spiel- und Festhaus stood in Worms, a town on the Rhine in Rheinland-Pfalz. Built in 1889, it combined a theatre with a festival hall and a restaurant wing. The circular auditorium had two balconies and seated twelve hundred. A removable forestage let the space switch between open performances and a traditional proscenium stage. The building followed a modest neuroman style, marked only by the city’s coat of arms, two lions on the balcony rail and a relief of Siegfried fighting the dragon. The house opened with a play by local writer Hans Herrig, though Worms soon nicknamed it ‘Three Centuries of Boredom’. Kaiser Wilhelm II visited in December 1889, the first German emperor in Worms for more than three centuries. Touring companies from Darmstadt and Mainz soon found the forestage impractical. After a 1906 rebuild the stage reverted to a standard ‘picture-frame’ layout. A 1932 fire destroyed the stage tower, but thanks to public donations a new revolving stage was ready within two years. In 1945 Allied bombing gutted the auditorium; only the festival-hall wing survived largely intact. Today the preserved festival wing houses the Mozartsaal inside the modern Kultur- und Tagungszentrum Das Wormser. The rebuilt auditorium of 1966 sits behind the original façade, its circular form still visible from the street. The restored hall seats a smaller audience, while the surrounding complex offers modern foyers and backstage facilities. Visitors walk past the old entrance arch and along the surviving side wing, where the Siegfried relief remains in place. The contrast between the modest 19th-century sculpture and the clean lines of the 1960s interior shows how the building has been adapted without losing its character.
