The Museum der Stadt Worms stands in the former Andreasstift building, a protected ensemble with an inner courtyard in the heart of the city. The site traces its origins to a church built in 1020, later altered over centuries and now classed as late Romanesque. Since 1930 the museum has occupied the converted church, preserving the city’s cultural memory in a place where history itself is visible in stone.

The museum holds finds from every major period of Worms’ past. On the ground floor a 1689 model of the city shows the layout after the destruction of the Palatinate War of Succession. Upstairs, prehistoric and Bronze Age objects sit beside Roman altars, gravestones and glassware, including a notable collection of Roman glass. The top floor covers the early Middle Ages, the Reformation with a dedicated Luther room, and later centuries, while a lapidarium in the former cloister displays gravestones and sarcophagi from Roman times to the modern era.

Visitors walk through rooms arranged chronologically, each section clearly labelled. The former church nave hosts large special exhibitions such as the 2023 show on myth and legend in Worms. Smaller displays explore everyday life and regional themes, drawing on loans and local collections. The building’s quiet courtyard offers a pause between galleries, linking the exhibits to the place where Worms’ story has unfolded for a thousand years.
