Diana Fountain

The Diana Fountain stands in Green Park, a royal park in the City of Westminster. It is a circular fountain topped by a statue of Diana, the mythological huntress, with her greyhound. The statue was created by Estcourt J Clack and is supported by stylised tree branches. The fountain replaced an earlier one by Sydney Smirke that had been damaged beyond repair. The fountain was a gift from the Constance Fund, set up by artist Sigismund Goetze in memory of his wife. After his death in 1939, his wife Constance administered the fund until 1951. The Ministry of Works approached her in 1950 to fund a replacement, leading to a competition judged by Sir William Reed Dick. Six sculptors competed, and Clack, a Devon schoolteacher, won the commission. The statue stood in the park’s centre from 1952 until 2011, when it was moved to a new entrance near Green Park Underground station. It was restored with added gilding before being reinstalled. The fountain’s surroundings include the park’s mature trees and pathways, offering a quiet spot near the busy station.
