Church of the Holy Trinity

Holy Trinity Church stands in Milford, a village on the edge of Belper in Derbyshire. Built in the 19th century, it was designed by William Bonython Moffatt and constructed by Mr Thompson of Derby. The church opened in 1848 after consecration by the Bishop of Lichfield. In 1909 a vestry and extra room were added to the south-east side under the direction of Hunter and Woodhouse of Belper. The building once formed part of the local parish network before services ended in 2021. The church is recognised for its pipe organ, installed in 1905 by Bevington and Sons at a cost of £450. This instrument was later sold to Australia in 1994 and replaced with an older organ from 1874 by J.M. Grunwell. The replacement had previously served Belper Baptist Church before being moved to Milford. Its specification remains recorded in the National Pipe Organ Register. Visitors find a quiet stone church set among Milford’s terraced houses and tree-lined streets. The interior keeps the 1909 extension visible along the south-east wall. The organ’s pipes and case remain in place though no longer played during services. Outside, the churchyard holds gravestones from the 19th and early 20th centuries. The building is now closed to regular worship but still stands as a local landmark.
