Christ Church

Christ Church stands in Belper, Derbyshire, as a Grade II listed parish church of the Church of England. Designed by Henry Isaac Stevens, it was consecrated in 1850 after a swift construction period. A vicarage followed in 1857, also by Stevens, on land south of the church. The building has seen careful restorations, notably in 1878 when T.R. Hibbert of Belper repainted the ceiling and walls. Local industrialist G.H. Strutt funded work that lowered the floor, laid encaustic tiles and repositioned the organ. The church’s organ, built by Brindley & Foster, holds a distinguished place in its history. Thomas Barker Mellor served as the first organist in 1862, followed by James Whitehead and A.W.V. Vorne Palmer, who came from Lichfield Cathedral. Frederick William Kirkland played the organ for over forty years, from 1883 to 1924. His son Alec Kirkland later took up the role around 1928. Inside, the church reveals its Victorian craftsmanship through painted ceilings, split chancel organ pipes and encaustic floor tiles. The lowered floor and extended gas lighting reflect the 1878 restoration under architect Mr. Robinson of Derby. The vestries added in 1903, designed by Hunter and Woodhouse of Belper, completed the church’s functional layout.
