Beinn Cheathaich

Beinn Cheathaich is a mountain top on the long ridge that runs from Glen Lyon to Glen Dochart and Loch Tay in the southern Highlands. It stands above the glens and the loch, a grassy summit with wide views in every direction. The mountain is listed as a Munro Top, a subsidiary summit of Meall Glas, its parent peak. Meall Glas itself reaches higher, but Beinn Cheathaich is recognised as a separate top on the same ridge. Hill lists in Britain and Ireland are checked and updated by several societies who share their data online. The ridge walk from Glen Lyon to Loch Tay passes over Beinn Cheathaich after Meall Glas. Walkers often stop at the summit to look back over the glen and forward to Ben Lawers and the Lawers range. The summit area is marked by a small cairn, a simple pile of stones left by previous visitors. From the top the eye follows the line of the ridge eastwards towards Loch Tay and westwards to the peaks of Glen Lyon. The path up to Beinn Cheathaich starts from the car park at the east end of Glen Lyon. It climbs steadily through heather and grass before flattening near the summit ridge. The final section is a short scramble over rocks to the cairn. On clear days the views take in Ben More, Schiehallion and the distant Grampians. The descent can follow the same route or branch off to explore the northern corries.
