Christie Park, Morecambe

Christie Park stood on the corner of Christie Avenue and Lancaster Road in Morecambe, Lancashire. It was once the home ground of Morecambe Football Club and held about 6,400 spectators. The stadium had three covered stands and one uncovered stand. The Main Stand, the only seated area, ran along one side of the pitch. The North Stand, the main terraced end behind a goal, held most of the home fans. The Umbro Stand opposite the North Stand hosted away supporters during segregated matches. Christie Park became notable in 2005 when Carlisle United played their home matches there for six weeks. This happened while repairs were carried out at Carlisle’s Brunton Park ground after flooding. The Carwash Terrace, the uncovered stand, took its name from the car wash behind it on Lancaster Road. The supporters’ club building behind the terrace was demolished in late 2006. Plans were later approved to build a new stand with sponsors’ facilities, conference rooms and offices on the site. The final goal at Christie Park was scored by David Artell. Demolition began shortly after the 2009–10 season ended, and by mid-August 2010 a new Sainsbury’s supermarket occupied the site. Morecambe Football Club moved to the Globe Arena off Westgate in Morecambe. The supermarket opened in late 2010, marking the end of the stadium’s presence in the town.
