Pfarrkirche hll. Petrus und Paulus, Vomp

The parish church of Saints Peter and Paul stands in Vomp, a village in the Schwaz district of Tirol. Its oldest parts date from the eighth century, though the present two-aisled building took shape between 1460 and 1480 under the master builder Gilg Mitterhofer. After fires in 1516 and 1809 it was rebuilt in the classical style, then given a new copper spire in the late 19th century. The church shelters notable art from several periods. Frescoes by Josef Arnold the Elder around 1820 show scenes from the lives of Peter and Paul, while Emanuel Walch painted the choir wall in 1893. The 1983–85 renovation restored the 17th-century baptismal font and installed a new organ in 1992. The surrounding cemetery contains a separate mortuary chapel to the south-east. Inside, the three-bay nave opens through a round arch into a two-bay choir with a ribbed vault and five-sided apse. Heavy pillars separate the main aisle from the side aisle, and the west door is early Baroque while the north and south doors still show late-Gothic pointed arches. Outside, the churchyard wall encloses a quiet space beside the village, marking one of Tirol’s oldest parishes.
