West India Quay

West India Quay station stands in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets, beside the dock of the same name. It sits where the Docklands Light Railway from Lewisham splits toward Bank and Stratford. The next stations are Canary Wharf to the north-west, Westferry to the south and Poplar to the north-east. The station lies in fare zone two, over the northern half of the dock. The station is worth the journey for its unusual position above water and its role in the Docklands network. It is the closest DLR stop to the Elizabeth line station at Canary Wharf. From the platforms you can see Canary Wharf station and Heron Quays just down the line. The shortest distance between any two DLR stations is the 199 metres to Canary Wharf. Trains from Bank to Lewisham do not call here, so passengers from the City must change at Canary Wharf or Poplar. Visitors find a single island platform reached by lift or stairs. Trains to Stratford, Bank and Canary Wharf run every few minutes off-peak. During peaks the service to Bank rises to twenty-two trains an hour. The station canopy was rebuilt in 2007 using recycled materials to withstand stronger winds from nearby towers. The rebuilt track now passes under the junction, so only one platform remains in use.
