Estádio José Alvalade

The Estádio José Alvalade stands in Lisbon’s northern district of Alvalade, a modern football stadium and the home of Sporting CP. It replaced the club’s older ground on the same site, named after the club’s founder José Alvalade from the early 20th century. The stadium forms part of the Alvalade XXI complex, which includes a shopping mall, cinema, health club, museum, sports pavilion and office building. The exterior once featured multicoloured tiles, later removed, and the seats were originally arranged in a random mosaic of mixed colours. Over time the seats were repainted dark green, matching the club’s colours, while the roof supports and stairways were also changed to green in 2011. Sporting CP built the stadium as part of a wider modernisation plan in the late 1990s, before Portugal hosted UEFA Euro 2004. The new stadium cost around €184 million, partly funded by the Portuguese state, and opened in August 2003 with a friendly against Manchester United. Luís Filipe scored the first goal in the new ground, with Cristiano Ronaldo making his final appearance for Sporting that day. The stadium hosted five Euro 2004 matches, including the semi-final where Portugal beat the Netherlands, and later staged the 2005 UEFA Cup Final. It has also hosted Champions League quarter-finals and semi-finals and the 2025 Women’s Champions League final. Visitors enter a space designed for 50,095 spectators, with underground parking and acoustics suited to major concerts. The stadium’s rings are divided by balconies that once held video screens, now replaced by LED panels, freeing up more seats. Exclusive Access Lounges offer bars and gourmet dining, and the capacity has since grown to 52,707 after renovations removed the moat. The surrounding Alvalade XXI complex provides shops, a cinema and leisure facilities, while Lisbon Metro’s Campo Grande station and nearby ring road make the stadium easy to reach.
