Denbigh Museum

Denbigh Museum stands in the old Shire Hall on Lôn Goch in the heart of Denbigh town. The building once served as the county court before becoming a library and museum in 1989. After closing in 2004, local campaigners worked for years to bring it back to life. In 2013 the town council bought the Shire Hall, and by 2014 it had been converted into a public museum again. Volunteers from the old Denbigh Town Trust now run the community museum. The museum’s story began in 1972 when the local history society first asked the council to create one. In the 1980s the county authority supported new library-museum buildings, and the Shire Hall was chosen. By the 1990s the small display failed to meet national standards and was removed from the register in 2004. A heritage service took down its exhibits the following year, but a new campaign group formed in 2006. Between 2011 and 2012 an independent study examined every possible site in town. The old Shire Hall on Lôn Goch offered the best chance of success. Inside, visitors find rooms arranged around the original court layout. Display cases hold local artefacts from Denbigh’s past. Photographs and documents show how the town has changed over the centuries. The building itself still has its fine Victorian fittings. Outside, the quiet street leads to the town centre only a few metres away.
