Burgstall Moosbürg

The Burgstall Moosbürg is a vanished medieval motte-and-bailey castle on the southern edge of Moosbürg, now part of Weiden in the Upper Palatinate. It sits in the flat floodplain of the Waldnaab river, where the soft ground once allowed a tall mound to be raised. The site is listed as a Bavarian archaeological monument. Archaeologists recognise the low rectangular mound as the last trace of the tower. It stands barely half a metre high today and covers 27 by 20 metres. A wide ditch once circled the mound, now mostly filled in, and traces suggest a second outer ditch with an intermediate rampart. The original drop from ditch bottom to mound top may have reached 1.6 metres. Visitors walk across farmland that covers the old defences. The mound is hard to spot among the plough furrows, yet it remains a protected site. The quiet riverside setting contrasts with the castle’s vanished strength.
