Burgstall Ullersricht

The remains of Ullersricht Motte stand on flat ground beside the Waldnaab river, seven hundred metres from its present course. A low oval mound, once topped by a wooden tower, is surrounded by two wide ditches and a central bank. The inner ditch measures seven metres across and the outer one four metres, while the central bank rises only a little above the surrounding fields. Archaeologists recognise the site as a classic example of a medieval motte-and-bailey fortification. The tower mound covers about thirty by twenty metres, though centuries of ploughing have flattened it almost to field level. A small dam, running north to south and rising one and a half metres, lies forty metres east of the mound but appears to belong to a later fishpond rather than the original castle. Visitors today see a quiet stretch of farmland where the earthworks are barely noticeable. The site is marked on local walking maps as a protected archaeological monument. A low hedge and a single information board stand beside the mound, offering a brief explanation of its history. From the spot there are wide views across the valley towards Weiden’s modern rooftops.
