St Mary's Greek Orthodox Church

St Mary’s Greek Orthodox Church stands on Trinity Road in Wood Green, north London. Built in 1871 as Trinity Methodist Church, it was designed by the Reverend R. N. Johnson. The building became a Greek Orthodox church in 1970. After a serious fire in 1986 it was rebuilt with strong support from the local Greek community. A dinner and dance organised by Nick Efthymiou, a pupil at the Greek school, raised much of the money needed. The church is also known as St Mary’s Cathedral or the Greek Orthodox Cathedral of the Dormition of the Mother of God. In 2012 it hosted the Greek Secondary School of London. The building’s history reflects the growth of the Greek community in the area. Its transformation from Methodist chapel to Orthodox cathedral shows how places of worship adapt to changing congregations. Inside, the church contains the usual fittings of an Orthodox interior. Visitors find icons, candlestands and a central dome painted with traditional frescoes. The rebuilt structure keeps the original brick exterior but adds modern safety features. The surrounding streets in Wood Green remain quiet and residential. The church sits among ordinary terraced houses, a quiet landmark in an everyday neighbourhood.
