Göstlinger Alpen
The Göstlinger Alpen stretch for about twenty-five kilometres along the border between Lower Austria and Styria. They rise from the Ybbs valley near Göstling and include the Hochkar ski area and the Dürrenstein massif. Limestone and dolomite dominate the range, which forms part of the larger Ybbstaler Alps. The mountains offer long-distance trails with wide views, several ski resorts and themed paths about the old iron industry. The highest peaks are the Dürrenstein at 1 878 metres and the Hochkar at 1 808 metres. Other notable summits include the Lärmerstange, Stumpfmauer and Gamsstein, as well as the long ridge of the Königsberg. Paths wind between the Hochkar ski area and the wild Dürrenstein massif. The Mendlingbach and Steinbach valleys cut the main ridge, while the Salza river marks the southern edge. Nearby peaks such as the Ötscher overlook the whole region.
