Archway tube station

Archway station stands in North London where Holloway Road, Highgate Hill, Junction Road and Archway Road meet. It sits directly beneath the Vantage Point building, a modern tower that marks the spot. The station belongs to the High Barnet branch of the Northern line, linking Highgate to the north and Tufnell Park to the south. It sits across two fare zones, zone 2 and zone 3, making it part of London’s wider transport network. The area once had no name but gained one through the station’s arrival. The main entrance now lies beneath Archway Tower on Junction Road, while a side entrance opens onto Highgate Hill. The station opened in 1907 as Highgate, designed by Leslie Green in his signature ox-blood glazed brick. It was renamed Archway (Highgate) in 1939 after the nearby road bridge over Archway Road. In 1947 it became simply Archway after a new Highgate station opened nearby. The platforms were once lined with cream tiles and letter-shaped insets, a style also seen at Highgate and Bethnal Green stations. These tiles were later replaced during retiling work. The station still has an unusual feature: platforms long enough for nine-car trains, an early effort to ease overcrowding. Visitors find a busy Underground station with escalators or 113 steps down to the platforms. The layout reflects its past as a terminus, with crossover tunnels and sidings still visible underground. Trains run every three to seven minutes during the day, linking Archway to Morden, Battersea Power Station, High Barnet and Mill Hill East. Above ground, London buses serve the station with routes including 4, 43 and 134. The surroundings include the steep slope of Highgate Hill and the modern Vantage Point tower, marking the station’s place in North London’s transport network.
