Burg Rosenheim

Burg Rosenheim stands on the Schlossberg above the Inn bridge in the village of Schloßberg, part of Stephanskirchen in the Rosenheim district. It was a medieval hilltop fort built after 1150 by the Hallgrafen of Wasserburg and first named in 1234 as Castrum Rosenheym. The site passed to Henry XIII, Duke of Lower Bavaria, in 1267. In 1425 it was damaged during the Bavarian House War, rebuilt, and finally destroyed in the War of the Spanish Succession in 1714. By 1749 the castle was a ruin and its last remains were cleared in the 19th century. The original complex probably had a squat keep with late-Gothic additions. Today only the castle site and the neck ditch can still be seen. The location overlooks the Inn valley and the modern bridge below. Archaeologists recognise it as a medieval and early-modern fortification listed as a protected monument. Visitors reach the Schlossberg by following paths from Schloßberg village. The open plateau offers wide views across the Inn to the rolling countryside. Information boards explain the site’s history and the castle’s role in regional conflicts. The quiet hilltop is a place to walk and imagine the fortress that once stood there.
