Sperrins

The Sperrins are a mountain range in Northern Ireland, stretching across County Tyrone and County Londonderry. The landscape is mostly moorland and blanket bog, shaped by glaciers long ago. Sawel Mountain is the highest peak, rising to 678 metres, while Carntogher towers over the Glenshane Pass at 464 metres. The Glenshane Pass, part of the A6 road, is known for harsh winter weather. The mountains are sparsely populated, with only about 150,000 people living in the region. The Sperrins provide a habitat for a wide variety of birds and mammals. Red foxes, sika deer, pine martens, and red squirrels are commonly found there. Peregrine falcons, buzzards, and sparrowhawks also live in the area. Golden eagles from a reintroduced population in Donegal have been spotted across the range, though they have not yet established a breeding population. The mountains are one of the last refuges of the red grouse in Northern Ireland. Visitors to the Sperrins can enjoy the distinctive glaciated landscape and the diverse wildlife. The rounded summits and blanket bogs create a unique and rugged scenery. The Glenshane Pass offers a dramatic route through the mountains, while the peaks provide sweeping views of the surrounding countryside. The area is designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, making it a worthwhile destination for nature lovers.
