Aughlish

Aughlish is a townland in County Derry, Northern Ireland, about 3.6 kilometres from Feeny. It contains at least six stone circles and two stone rows, making it one of the most important prehistoric sites in the region. The landscape is dotted with low hills and open fields, giving the area a quiet, rural feel. The circles vary in size and shape, some standing complete while others survive only as fragments. A fallen stone 150 centimetres high lies within one circle, with another of the same height standing outside to the north. Three of the circles include alignments, one stretching for 18 metres in a straight line. Experts recognise Aughlish as a typical Bronze Age ritual site, similar to others found around the Sperrin Hills. Aubrey Burl, a well-known archaeologist, has studied the layout and argues that it shows links with circle builders in England, Scotland and other parts of Northern Ireland. The careful arrangement of stones suggests a shared tradition across these areas. The site’s remote location adds to its sense of mystery, as visitors walk among ancient stones untouched by modern development. Unlike more famous sites, Aughlish remains little known outside archaeological circles. Visitors find a series of low stone circles scattered across a gentle slope. One circle holds 41 small stones, while others show clear alignments pointing to distant landmarks. The fallen and standing stones create a mix of upright and horizontal shapes, giving the site an uneven but intriguing appearance. The surrounding fields and hills provide a peaceful backdrop, with few distractions from the past. The lack of crowds allows for quiet reflection on the people who built these structures thousands of years ago. The site invites visitors to imagine the rituals and gatherings that once took place here.
