Messelberg

The Messelberg rises 749 metres above sea level in the Swabian Alb, east of Donzdorf. Its steep, wooded slopes give the mountain a striking outline that dominates the surrounding countryside. The highest point is crowned by a small rock outcrop called the Messelstein. The Messelstein juts out from the forested slope and offers wide views. On clear days the Black Forest can be seen 130 kilometres away. Archaeologists have found traces of an ancient cult site here, and the remains of a small castle stand nearby. The Schwäbischer-Alb-Nordrand-Weg, a long-distance trail, crosses the summit plateau. A grass airstrip operated by the Fliegergruppe Donzdorf lies 1.7 kilometres south-east of the Messelstein. West of the runway, right on the edge of the Alb escarpment, hang-gliders and paragliders launch into the sky. The contrast between the quiet wooded slopes and the lively flight activity gives the place its special character.
