Schloss Winzingen

Schloss Winzingen stands in the village of Winzingen, a part of Donzdorf in the district of Göppingen. The present building was constructed at the start of the 17th century on the site of a medieval stronghold first recorded in the high Middle Ages. After the local noble family died out in 1369, the property passed through several noble houses before Joachim Berchtold von Roth bought it in 1599. He demolished the old castle and commissioned a three-storey rectangular Renaissance mansion around 1610. The castle returned to the Neuhausen family in 1621 and was sold the same year to Freiherr Benjamin von Bubenhofen. Under his ownership the Unterelchingen master builder David Madel carried out alterations in 1743–44. Madel’s work survives in the Bubenhofen coat of arms above the garden gate, three ceilings on the first floor, the staircase and the roof frame. In 1824 the Rechberg and Rothenlöwen counts purchased the estate and still own it today. The private residence is not open to the public, yet the exterior shows the Renaissance core and later Baroque touches. The garden portal carries the Bubenhofen arms, while inside the first floor preserves Madel’s plaster ceilings and the staircase he designed. The surrounding village of Winzingen lies in gentle countryside near Donzdorf, offering quiet lanes and distant views across the Alb plateau.
