The Gatehouse

The Gatehouse stands beside the Monnow Bridge in Monmouth, Wales. It is a public house with a restaurant, a balcony for seating, and a function room. The building was once a row of three cottages between the bridge and the pub. These cottages were demolished in the 1950s to make way for the beer garden. The garden now overlooks the River Monnow and the bridge. The pub has a history dating back to at least 1812. It was originally known as the Barley Mow and was run by William Jones and his family from 1822 until the late 19th century. The Loyal Trafalgar Lodge of Druids Friendly Society held a Jubilee Dinner here in 1887 with over 100 guests. Later, the Wakin, Stead, and Harley families became licensees. The pub was supplied by Ind Coope & Allsopp with Burton Ales from 1939 until the late 20th century. Visitors find a welcoming pub with a restaurant area and a balcony for seating. The function room is available for events. The beer garden offers views of the River Monnow and Monnow Bridge. The area was once home to a former pub called The Dolphin between 1721 and 1858. The Gatehouse remains one of the best-known inns in Monmouth, with a history spanning some 200 years.
