Schloss Ittendorf

Burg Ittendorf stands on a hill about 440 metres above sea level in Ittendorf, a district of the small town of Markdorf in the Bodenseekreis. Originally built in the 13th century by the Schenken von Schmalegg family, it passed to Salem Abbey in 1302. The medieval castle was destroyed during the Peasants’ War of 1524. In the 17th century the monastery of Einsiedeln rebuilt it as a three-storey stepped-gable mansion surrounded by a ring wall. After secularisation it became private property. The building served as the seat of the Statthalter from 1671 to 1677 and later housed the Badische Bauernschule, founded in 1931 by Lambert Schill and attended by Minister Andreas Hermes. The school was closed in 1933 and refounded after the Second World War. Since 1959 the Schloss has belonged to Generalkonsul Wolfgang Julius Emil Böttger and since 2015 to his daughter-in-law Tanja Jasmin Y Böttger. Visitors see a medieval ring wall enclosing a three-storey stepped-gable house. The church of St Martin nearby is another local landmark. The hilltop offers views across the surrounding countryside. The site remains in private hands and is not open to the public.
