Burgstall Bürgberg (Markdorf)

The Burgstall Bürgberg stands on flat land near Markdorf in the Bodenseekreis. It is the remains of a small medieval lowland castle, now partly covered by a farm. The site still shows the old ring ditch on three sides, though the west side has lost its ditch through later building work. Historians think it may have been a motte built by the Birchberg brothers—Albert, Ulrich and Hans—around the 13th century. No written records or finds have been found to confirm this, but a local village notice mentions the motte tradition. Visitors see a working farm sitting on the raised platform of the former castle. The north and east ditches are still deep and clear, while the south and west sides have been levelled for farm use. No walls or cellars remain above ground, so the earthworks are the main sign of the old fortress.
