Girls Citizen School
The former Mädchen-Bürgerschule stands in Uetersen, Schleswig-Holstein. Built in 1813, it was commissioned by the district governor of Pinneberg and Josias von Qualen, the monastery provost of Uetersen. The single-storey building has a hipped roof and gabled street and garden fronts. Original entrance doors survive from the time of construction, while the draught lobby door dates from around 1900. It originally housed two teachers’ flats and four classrooms before later serving as emergency housing for refugees and a local history museum. The building narrowly escaped demolition in the 1970s thanks to private campaigners and the Schleswig-Holstein Heritage Society. Between 1983 and 1989 it was restored and renamed Haus Ueterst End. Today it contains a museum with a large amber collection and a memorial to former pupils of the Ludwig-Meyn-Gymnasium. Exhibits also include household items from the former German provinces of Pomerania, East Prussia and West Prussia. Recognised for its architectural, historical and urban design importance, the building is protected as a cultural monument. Visitors find a simple, dignified one-storey structure with a low-pitched roof and symmetrical gables. Inside, rooms display amber artefacts alongside everyday objects brought by refugees. The memorial corner honours former seminar students. Outside, the street elevation shows the original entrance with its historic doors, while the garden side presents a quiet, restored façade. The building’s modest scale and careful preservation make it a quiet point of interest in Uetersen.
