Kirkcudbright Bay

Kirkcudbright Bay is an inlet of the Irish Sea on the coast of Galloway in southwest Scotland. Its coastline lies entirely within Dumfries and Galloway and the former county of Kirkcudbrightshire. The bay stretches about ten kilometres from north to south and reaches up to three kilometres in width. The River Dee flows into the bay at its northern end, creating wide tidal flats. A narrow peninsula called St Mary’s Isle splits the bay in two, separating the river’s western channel from Manxman’s Lake on the east. At the bay’s southern entrance, near the western shore, lies Little Ross island, where a shifting sandbar has caused many shipwrecks over the years. The Dundrennan Range occupies much of the eastern shoreline. This weapons testing range has restricted public access to parts of the coast for decades. The bay’s waters remain busy with fishing boats and small craft, while the surrounding land rises gently into low hills covered in heather and gorse. Seabirds gather on the tidal flats at low tide, feeding on worms and shellfish exposed by the receding water. The contrast between the working harbour at Kirkcudbright town and the quiet military zone gives the bay a divided character. Visitors find a peaceful stretch of water framed by rolling hills and saltmarsh. The town of Kirkcudbright sits at the head of the bay, its whitewashed houses and grey slate roofs facing the water. A long promenade runs along the waterfront, offering views across the bay to St Mary’s Isle and the hills beyond. The tidal flats reveal glistening mudflats at low tide, where walkers and birdwatchers explore the shoreline. Little Ross island can be seen from the western shore, its low outline marking the bay’s entrance.
