Castle Madoc Mound

Castell Madog is a medieval earthwork mound near the village of Castell Madog, five kilometres from Brecon in Powys. It stands without the usual surrounding defensive wall known as a bailey. Most mounds of this kind in Wales were built between the late 11th and the second half of the 12th century from soil and stone, often surrounded by a ditch. The Normans introduced this style of fortification to Britain from France, and the Welsh adopted the technology. Cadw, the historic environment service of Wales, recognises the mound and lists it as a scheduled monument with reference BR192. The largest concentration of such mounds in Britain lies along the Welsh borderlands, including parts of Shropshire, Cheshire, Herefordshire, Powys and Flintshire. The site offers a quiet walk up the grassy slope to the top, where the view stretches over the surrounding countryside.
