Festungsmuseum Salzburg

The Festungsmuseum stands in the Hohen Stock of Hohensalzburg fortress high above Salzburg’s old town. The fortress itself is one of Europe’s largest still-intact medieval castles, built in the 11th century and expanded over the centuries. The museum occupies the oldest part of the complex, where visitors enter through heavy oak doors that have guarded the fortress for hundreds of years. Inside, the museum shows how the fortress was built and lived in from the Middle Ages to the early modern period. Displays include reconstructions of medieval kitchens and sleeping chambers, with tools and pottery arranged exactly as they were centuries ago. A separate section covers the fortress’s role in warfare, featuring weapons, armour and even musical instruments used by the garrison bands. Beyond the museum rooms lie the fortress’s grand historic chambers. These include the Golden Hall with its ornate 16th-century ceiling and the Prince’s Chamber lined with portraits of Salzburg’s rulers. From the terraces outside, views stretch across Salzburg’s red-roofed streets and up to the peaks of the Alps. The contrast between the museum’s scholarly exhibits and the sweeping panorama makes the visit memorable.
