Festungsbahn

The Festungsbahn is a funicular railway that connects Salzburg’s Hohensalzburg Fortress with Festungsgasse below the fortress walls. It opened in 1892 as a water-balance funicular and was rebuilt several times, most recently in 2011. The line is operated by Salzburg AG, which also runs the city’s buses. It should not be confused with the older Reisszug line, which carries goods to the castle. The funicular replaced barracks that once stood on the site. The funicular makes the fortress far more accessible to visitors than before. In 1960 it gained new cars and an electric drive, and later upgrades increased passenger capacity and speed. The 2011 modernisation added two new vehicles and panoramic windows for better views of the city. The line now carries thousands of visitors daily, linking the historic fortress with the streets below. A ride on the Festungsbahn lasts just under a minute and offers a clear view of Salzburg through its large windows. The lower station sits at Festungsgasse, while the upper station stands inside the fortress grounds. The short journey provides a striking contrast between the old fortress and the modern city. Visitors step out at the fortress entrance ready to explore its museums and ramparts. The funicular itself is a working piece of transport history.
