Hinterer Sajatkopf

The Hintere Sajatkopf stands at 3 098 metres in the Venedigergruppe, a high chain in East Tyrol. It is a subsidiary summit of the Kreuzspitze, linked by a broad north-west ridge. The Sajatkar valley lies to the west, where the Sajathütte offers a base for climbers. To the east the Timmeltal opens, adding a contrasting landscape. The peak is surrounded by the rugged walls of the Wallhornkamm. The climb is graded I+ and follows a mix of gullies and slabs from the Sajathütte. An alternative route leaves the hut, ascends to the Vorderer Sajatkopf, then traverses a wide shale and rock crest to the summit. Both lines involve scrambling on steep terrain. The views from the top stretch across the Hohe Tauern and into Italy. Georg Zlöbl’s guidebook lists the peak among East Tyrol’s three-thousanders. On the summit visitors find a small cairn and a metal cross. The ridge walk rewards with airy exposure and distant glaciers. Below, the Sajathütte sits at 2 600 metres, a stone-built refuge with dormitory rooms. The route back can be varied by descending into the Timmeltal for a quieter return. The whole outing shows the raw beauty of the Venediger peaks.
