Vorkarwendel

The Vorkarwendel is a broad foothill range of the Karwendel mountains in the Northern Limestone Alps. It lies east and north of the Riß valley and north of the Sonnjoch group, with peaks rising above 2,000 metres. The area is known for its open landscapes and steep rock faces that attract climbers and walkers year round. The Schafreuter is one of the most popular summits, offering wide views across the Hinterautal-Vomper chain and down to the Tölzer Hut just below its top. A high-level walk from the Tölzer Hut over the Grasberg ridge passes the Fleischbank, Hölzelstaljoch, Grasberg and Kompar before reaching the Plumsjoch Hut, with glimpses of the Falken, Gamsjoch and Sonnjoch groups to the south. Much of the Vorkarwendel belongs to the Karwendel nature reserve, protecting its alpine meadows and wildlife. King Ludwig II of Bavaria often stayed here and had a hunting lodge built in the foothills. Among the many recognised peaks are the Montscheinspitze at 2,106 metres and the Schreckenspitze at 2,022 metres, both challenging climbs for experienced mountaineers. Lower down, the Hochplatte at 1,813 metres provides gentler walks with sweeping views over the valley. The contrast between rugged ridges and sheltered valleys makes the Vorkarwendel a rewarding place for both serious climbers and casual walkers.
