Gesäuse National Park
The Gesäuse National Park lies in the mountainous Upper Styrian region of Austria. It covers large parts of the Gesäuse range and the steep water gap of the Enns river between Admont and Hieflau. The park also includes parts of the municipal areas of Johnsbach, Weng, Landl, and Sankt Gallen. The Enns river cuts a dramatic gorge through the limestone massif. The park was established on 26 October 2002. The park covers 110 square kilometres, with another 15 square kilometres planned for expansion. Its highest mountain is Hochtor at 2,369 metres. The steep slopes and deep valleys create a rugged landscape. The Enns river’s water gap is one of the park’s defining features. The park protects a variety of alpine habitats and wildlife. Visitors find well-marked trails winding through forests and alpine meadows. The Johnsbach valley offers gentle walks alongside the river. Higher paths lead to rocky ridges with wide views over the Enns valley. The park’s limestone cliffs attract climbers and scramblers. The steep water gap near Admont is a dramatic sight. The park’s trails suit all levels of walkers.
