Kath. Pfarrkirche hl. Georg

The Catholic parish church of St George stands on a gentle rise at the northern edge of Reibers, a village grouped around the market town of Dobersberg in the Thaya valley of Lower Austria. The modest churchyard is enclosed by a low stone wall and a wrought-iron gate. A single flight of shallow steps leads up from the lane to the church porch. The building has been protected as a listed monument since the 1990s. The church began as a wayside chapel dedicated to St George, first mentioned in 1496 when Pope Alexander VI granted an indulgence to those who visited it. In 1785, during the reforms of Emperor Joseph II, Reibers became an independent parish with its own priest. The old chapel was enlarged in the plain Josephinian style, giving the church its broad rectangular nave and shallow semicircular apse. The west tower, with its onion dome, was added in 1903, and the nave was extended sideways in 1936 to create a broad hall church. Inside, the granite high altar and side altars stand against plain white walls. The flat ceiling and rear galleries create a light, uncluttered space. The semicircular apse is framed by a simple arch. The granite font echoes baroque forms, and the organ, built by Franz Capek in 1906, stands on the gallery above the entrance. The churchyard offers a quiet view over the surrounding fields and the wooded hills of the Thaya valley.
