Dorney Lake

Dorney Lake is an artificial rowing lake and events venue near the village of Dorney in Buckinghamshire. It lies about three kilometres west of Windsor and Eton, close to the River Thames. Built and run by Eton College, the lake cost £17 million to construct and opened in 2006 after a decade of work. It meets international standards with a straight racing length of 2,200 metres and eight lanes each 13.5 metres wide. The site also includes a separate return channel and an island that divides it from the main water. The lake served as the rowing and canoe sprint venue for the 2012 Summer Olympics and Paralympics. Temporary seating for 20,000 spectators was added for the Games, supported by a new bridge and upgraded roads. During events it was staffed by around 3,500 people and could handle up to 30,000 visitors a day. A temporary Thames bridge linked the lake to Windsor Racecourse for transport. The venue has hosted major regattas every year since 2005, including World Championships and Olympic trials. When no events are taking place, the public may walk or cycle along the two-kilometre paths beside the lake. The flat, straight routes attract runners, skaters and roller-ski trainers. The open landscape draws dog walkers and families enjoying the scenery. Annual regattas such as Marlow, Metropolitan and Wallingford have moved from the Thames to Dorney Lake. The still water and consistent conditions make it a reliable training ground for rowers and canoeists.
