Bray Pit

Bray Pit is a small nature reserve on the edge of Holyport village in Berkshire. It covers just over two hectares and centres on a flooded gravel pit surrounded by woodland, hedges and grassy banks. The site once belonged to the Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire Wildlife Trust but is no longer listed by them. The reserve supports a wide variety of wildlife. Among the invertebrates are several bumblebee species and two mason bees. Thirteen bird species have been recorded, including the little grebe, grey heron and kingfisher. The flora includes black knapweed, oxeye daisy and wild carrot. Visitors walk a loop path around the flooded pit and through the surrounding strip of woodland. The mature hedge and grassy bank provide cover for birds and insects. The flooded area reflects the sky and trees, creating a quiet spot for watching waterfowl.
