Simonsberg

Simonsberg rises between Stellenbosch, Paarl and Franschhoek in South Africa’s winelands. It is a separate ridge that stands apart from the surrounding Cape Fold ranges. The mountain reaches 1 390 m and carries several peaks connected by walking paths. One trail starts from a nearby wine farm and winds up to the highest point. Other routes lead to smaller summits and through rocky outcrops. The mountain is named after Simon van der Stel, the first governor of the Cape. He also founded Stellenbosch and gave his name to Simon’s Town. Beneath the slopes lie seven caves opened during a short-lived silver mining project. The caves add an element of geological interest to the landscape. Visitors find wide views across vineyards and valleys from the summit. The paths cross open slopes and patches of fynbos vegetation. Rock formations appear along the way, and the caves can be explored with care. The wine farm at the trailhead offers refreshments before or after the climb. The mountain’s quiet trails contrast with the busy wine estates below.
