Schloss Maroldsweisach stands in the centre of the small market town of Maroldsweisach in Lower Franconia. It is a two-storey building with a mansard roof, its simple classical façade marked by three projecting sections. The entrance on the front is modest, while the rear of the building rises from a stone base that evens out the slope of the ground.

The castle’s history begins in the 13th century when a local noble family took the name of the village. In the 15th century the Stein von Altenstein family became lords here, holding the estate as vassals of Würzburg bishopric. After the castle was destroyed in 1525 during the Peasants’ War, a new building was begun in 1768 by the Horneck von Weinheim barons. Lack of funds left the upper storey uncompleted, giving the structure its unusual, half-finished look. The last aristocratic owners, the Bentzel-Sturmfeder-Horneck counts, sold the property to the local Catholic parish in the last century.

Inside, the former chapel and the main ground-floor hall are richly decorated in the rococo style. The chapel’s ceiling bears shell motifs in plaster, while the hall’s walls and ceiling are covered with shell and lattice patterns, garlands of flowers and musical instruments. The long, low rooms and the restrained classical exterior create a quiet contrast, making the castle a modest but striking reminder of the region’s past.
