St Benet's Chapel, Netherton

St Benet’s Chapel stands in Chapel Lane, Netherton, a quiet lane in the Metropolitan Borough of Sefton. The church and its attached priest’s house form a Grade II* listed building, recognised as one of the best preserved early Catholic churches in the north-west. It replaced a cottage and barn used by Benedictine priests after the Catholic Relief Acts of 1778 and 1791 allowed open worship. The presbytery faces the road while the chapel hides behind it, a deliberate arrangement from the 18th century. The chapel became redundant in 1975 and was restored by the Historic Chapels Trust before being returned to the Archdiocese of Liverpool. The presbytery now houses retired priests after its own restoration in 2004. The chapel’s brick walls carry stone dressings and a stone slate roof, with two bays and round-headed sash windows. A bellcote with a cross crowns the west gable, and paired doors mark the north entrance beneath a blind tympanum. Inside, a gallery with a stick balustrade overlooks the space, reached by a dog-leg staircase. The east wall is richly decorated with fluted Corinthian pilasters, an entablature with urns, and an open pediment framing curtains that reveal a painted Gloria and cherubs. The altar, probably from the 1830s, is made of marbled stone. The presbytery appears as a modest two-bay house from the road, with sash and casement windows set under wedge lintels. A six-panel door with an open pediment and fanlight marks the entrance, while a blind window sits above. On the north side, a round-headed stair window lights the interior. Chimney stacks rise from gables on each end, completing the simple yet carefully detailed composition. The whole site preserves an important moment in Catholic history while offering a clear view of 18th-century church building in the north-west.
