Pfarrkirche Mariae Himmelfahrt, Hollenthon
The Catholic parish church of Mariae Himmelfahrt stands on a gentle rise in the north-east of Hollenthon, a village in the Wiener Neustadt district of Lower Austria. Built as a Roman Catholic church dedicated to the Assumption of Mary, it was later linked to Stift Reichersberg and placed under the deanery of Kirchschlag. The building began as a fortified church in the 16th century and still carries the marks of its past. The church’s history includes several phases of rebuilding and renovation. After damage in the 1683 Turkish campaign, it was restored and given a Baroque appearance between the 17th and 18th centuries. The Probst Mathias Führer oversaw further Baroque alterations from 1735 to 1752, including the addition of a west gallery. A former chapel from 1593 was discovered beneath the north sacristy during later work. The church regained parish status in 1783 and has been restored several times, most recently in 1999. The church is a single-nave Baroque structure with a three-sided chancel and a western tower, enclosed by a low churchyard wall. Inside, the mid-18th-century high altar was restored in 2000, and an octagonal font dates from the early 1400s. The organ was built by Bruno Riedl in 1976. The setting combines the quiet charm of the village with the solid presence of a building shaped by centuries of use and care.
