Propstei Zwettl

The Propstei Zwettl stands on the Propsteiberg south of Zwettl’s old town in Lower Austria. The complex includes a Romanesque church, the attached Michaelskapelle, a cemetery with a Romanesque charnel house, the former provost’s building and a former parish house called the ‘Kasten’. A monumental sandstone Crucifixion group marks the end of the Stations of the Cross before the protected monument. The site is worth visiting for its layered history and surviving fabric. Built in the late 11th or early 12th century by the Kuenringers, it became Zwettl’s first parish church under Pilgrim of Kuenring. After destruction by the Babenbergs in 1230–31 the church remained, while a larger parish court was erected on the former castle site. Andreas Königsteiner founded the provostry in 1483 with papal and imperial backing, though the planned chapter never reached full strength because of war taxes and the rise of Protestantism. Visitors find a Romanesque granite church with later Gothic and Baroque changes. The nave has a wooden barrel vault on double ribs, and the west gallery is a notable two-storey Romanesque feature. The Michaelskapelle, first recorded in 1383 but built in the 13th century, served as a sacristy and now holds side altars. The cemetery charnel house and the former provost’s house complete the ensemble, overlooked by the sandstone Crucifixion group.
