Glödis

Glödis is a striking mountain in the Schober Group of East Tyrol, standing at 3,206 metres. Its near-perfect pyramid shape has earned it the nickname the ‘Matterhorn of the Schober Group’. Seen from the Debanttal valley or the Kalser Lesachtal, the peak dominates the skyline. The name itself may come from an old Slavic word meaning ‘seeing’, or from terms linked to water erosion. Locally it was once called the Großer Gößnitzkopf, while other names include Klöders and Granatkogel. Climbers reach the summit mainly via the Lienzer Hut at 1,977 metres. The route follows the Franz Keil Way to the Kalser Törl, then takes the southeast arête. A klettersteig installed in 2006 makes this section moderate in difficulty. The southwest ridge from the Kalser Törl is another popular choice, graded II–III. The northeast ridge from Glödistörl is rockier, while the west ridge is the most challenging at IV–V. From the hut the path rises through alpine meadows and boulder fields. The final sections involve scrambling on solid rock or iron rungs. Views stretch across the Schober Group and down to the valleys below. On clear days the Dolomites appear in the distance. The climb rewards effort with a sense of isolation and a broad panorama of high peaks.
