Gosford House

Gosford House stands on the edge of East Lothian’s coast, about three kilometres northeast of Longniddry. The neoclassical mansion sits in 2,000 hectares of parkland and coastline, reached by the A198 Aberlady Road. It has been the Charteris family seat since the 18th century, home first to the 12th Earl and later to his son James, the 13th Earl. The south wing remains the private family residence while the rest opens to visitors. The estate includes Category A listed buildings such as the stables and the pyramid-style mausoleum. The house was designed by Robert Adam but completed by William Young in 1891 after earlier wings were damaged by damp. The Marble Hall, added by the 10th Earl, rises three storeys with a double staircase and picture gallery. Films like House of Mirth and Outlander have used the interiors, and the curling house in the grounds is a rare Scottish example. The 13th Earl has led conservation work to repair wartime damage and restore the ponds. Inside, visitors find alabaster colonnades, ornate plasterwork and Venetian windows that echo Adam’s original designs. The Marble Hall’s elaborate fireplace and Palladian screens dominate the space. Outside, the designed landscape includes restored ponds and sweeping views toward Edinburgh on clear days. The estate’s listed status recognises its historic buildings and gardens, making it a notable example of Scottish country-house heritage.
