Myreton Motor Museum

The Myreton Motor Museum stands in open countryside near the village of Aberlady in East Lothian. It occupies a single building surrounded by farmland and lies a short drive from the coast. The museum opened in August 1966 under the direction of William P. Dale, who began collecting vehicles soon after the Second World War. Dale wanted to preserve examples of everyday transport as well as racing cars. Over the decades the collection grew to cover most of the twentieth century. The museum’s exhibits include commercial vehicles, cars, motorcycles, bicycles and toy cars. A large section of motoring memorabilia shows how cars shaped life in Scotland. One of the most talked-about items is a 1989 Jaguar XJS donated in 2006 by the Liberal Democrat leader Sir Menzies Campbell. Campbell gave the car to fulfil a promise he made during his campaign for party leader. Inside, visitors find the vehicles arranged in chronological order from the 1900s to the 1990s. The main hall displays classic saloons alongside racing machines and motorcycles. Smaller rooms hold bicycles and a display of toy cars. Outside, the museum’s grounds include a picnic area and a short nature trail. The setting remains peaceful, with views across fields to the Lammermuir Hills.
