Diplomatic Academy of Vienna

The Diplomatic Academy of Vienna stands in the fourth district of Vienna, within the former imperial summer residence of the Theresianum. Empress Maria Theresa founded its predecessor, the Oriental Academy, in 1754. The Academy became an independent public postgraduate institution in 1996 under Austrian public law. It prepares graduates for careers in diplomacy, international organisations and the private sector. Teaching is conducted in English, French and German, focusing on international relations, law, economics and history. The Academy’s history reflects Austria’s evolving role in global affairs. Bruno Kreisky, foreign minister in the 1960s, revived the institution after Austria joined the United Nations in 1955. Its first director, Ernst Florian Winter, introduced modern teaching methods such as UN simulations and language laboratories. The Academy later expanded its programmes and gained academic recognition, including a master’s degree jointly accredited with the University of Vienna. Visitors to the campus find a blend of historic and modern facilities. The Lower Stöckel Wing houses a ceremonial hall, restaurant and expanded library. The Academy offers five postgraduate programmes, including a one-year diploma and two-year master’s degrees. Its interdisciplinary approach combines theory with practical skills like negotiation and crisis management. The campus provides a setting for study and dialogue in the heart of Vienna.
