Hauptplatz 20, Wiener Neustadt

The four-storey building stands on the north-east corner of Wiener Neustadt’s main square, its late-19th-century façade rising above the pavement. First recorded in 1479, it passed from Emperor Friedrich III to a local citizen before the great fire of 1834 gutted the ground floor and damaged the front. After rebuilding, the ground level became a coffee house and the façade took on its present look. The couple Leopold and Maria Bernhart bought the café in 1917 and ran it as a family business until 2016. Their name remains above the door, and the café still occupies the ground floor. A small garden terrace opens onto the square, offering a view of the daily market stalls. Inside, the medieval core survives behind modern shop fronts. The späthistoristische façade shows arched windows and ornamental plaster beneath the cornice. From the square the building’s scale and colour mark it out among the surrounding arcades, a quiet witness to Wiener Neustadt’s past.
