Katzenstein Castle

Burg Katzenstein stands on a hill above a small river valley in the Härtsfeld region, 538 metres above sea level. It is one of the oldest surviving castles built by the Hohenstaufen family in Germany. The castle sits near an old Roman road called the Frankensträßle, once used by travellers moving between Faimingen and Bopfingen. The Lords von Cassenstein first appear in records in 1099, serving the Counts of Dillingen. Ownership passed through several noble families, including the von Hürnheim and von Oettingen, before the castle was rebuilt after a fire in 1648. Since 1939, it has been privately owned and remains open to visitors. The castle’s history includes a shift from Romanesque to early Gothic art. In 1973, restorers uncovered vivid medieval frescoes in the St Laurentius chapel, painted between 1250 and 1280. These paintings reveal the artistic changes of the 13th century. The chapel itself was restored and reopened in 1973 after years of neglect. The castle also contains dining rooms and hotel rooms for guests. Its position on the old Frankish road adds to its historical importance. Visitors find a well-preserved medieval castle with later additions. The St Laurentius chapel holds the most striking discovery: colourful frescoes hidden beneath layers of dirt. The castle’s rooms include spaces for dining and overnight stays. Views stretch across the surrounding valley and hills. The site reflects centuries of ownership changes and rebuilding. It offers a quiet but impressive glimpse into Germany’s medieval past.
