Schloss Atzenbrugg

Schloss Atzenbrugg stands in the small market town of Atzenbrugg in western Lower Austria. The building began as a medieval fortress with a ring moat and later became a country mansion. Stifts Klosterneuburg owned it from 1379 and added a chapel dedicated to Saint Catherine in 1398. After damage in the 1683 Turkish siege, Italian stonemason Domenico Piazzol carried out repairs in 1691. Further restorations followed around 1746, and the estate passed to the local council in 1977. The house is now a museum devoted to the life and work of Franz Schubert. In the early 19th century the estate manager Joseph Derffel welcomed Schubert and his friends, including Franz von Schober, Moritz von Schwind and Leopold Kupelwieser. From 1820 to 1822 Schubertiaden—musical gatherings—were held at the castle and nearby Aumühle. A century later, Schubert enthusiasts such as Rosa Schwab organised concerts that raised funds for the building’s restoration and the creation of the Schubert Museum. The museum’s prized exhibit is a lock of Schubert’s hair, lent by the Vienna Library. Visitors walk through rooms that still feel like the setting of those early 19th-century gatherings. The Schubert Museum displays manuscripts, portraits and personal items of the composer and his circle. Outside, the park and the restored Aumühle host regular Schubertiades. The landscape of the Tullner Basin, with its gentle fields and wooded edges, completes the scene.
