Royal Danish Academy of Sciences and Letters

The Royal Danish Academy of Sciences and Letters stands in central Copenhagen on H.C. Andersens Boulevard. The building was designed by architect Vilhelm Petersen and has housed the academy since 1899. Before that, meetings took place in private homes and at Prinsens Palais. The academy was founded in 1742 to strengthen science in Denmark and promote interdisciplinary understanding. King Frederik X of Denmark serves as its Protector. The Carlsberg Foundation, established in 1876, shares the building and supports scientific work. The academy brings together prominent scientists from all fields of basic research. It organises biweekly meetings, publishes scientific works, and awards medals to scientists. Since 1745, it has run its own publishing company with four series under the title *Scientia Danica*. The academy also manages foundations that fund research stays abroad. Notable members include Albert Einstein, Charles Darwin, Niels Bohr, and Marie Skłodowska-Curie, the first female member. The Young Academy of Denmark was established in 2011 for excellent young researchers. Visitors find a grand building with rooms for lectures, symposiums, and public events. The academy’s historical archive holds portraits, letters, unpublished prize essays, models, and diagrams. These records were moved to the Danish National Archives in 2019 but remain accessible via the public platform Daisy. The presidium, led by Professor Marie Louise Nosch, directs the academy’s work with support from a secretariat. The building reflects the academy’s long tradition of scientific collaboration and discovery.
