The Heimatmuseum Emmersdorf occupies a 16th-century house in the heart of Emmersdorf an der Donau, a small market town in Lower Austria’s Melk district. The building sits under a low hipped roof and carries a heavy projecting bay supported by thick console brackets and sturdy pilasters from the late 16th or early 17th century. Behind it, an 18th-century rear wing slopes beneath a smaller hipped roof, its long front marked by dark lines showing the highest flood levels ever reached. The museum preserves everyday objects that once belonged to Emmersdorf families over many generations. Visitors find tools and furniture arranged in rooms that still show their original timber beams and whitewashed walls. A narrow staircase leads up to a low attic where spinning wheels and woven cloth recall the textile trades that once flourished along the river. Outside, the quiet lane preserves the same cobbled surface that carts rolled over centuries ago. The flood marks on the rear wing stand as silent reminders of the Danube’s occasional surges. The building itself, protected by the federal Denkmalschutz, offers a glimpse of how a Danube-side community lived before modern times.
